The Little Bird Who Learned to Fly

A small bird taking its first flight from a branch

High in a tall green tree lived a little bird named Pip. Pip had soft grey feathers, bright eyes, and a nest that felt warm and safe. But there was one thing Pip had never done: fly.

Every morning, the other young birds leapt from their branches and swooped through the sky. Pip watched them and felt a flutter of fear. "What if I fall?" Pip whispered.

Pip's mother landed gently beside the nest. "Falling is just the first part of flying," she said. "Every bird who flies today once fell yesterday."

The first try

Pip stood at the edge of the branch. The ground looked very far away. Pip spread two small wings, took a breath, and jumped — and tumbled straight down into a soft pile of leaves.

It did not feel like flying. It felt like falling. Pip wanted to give up.

"Try one more time," said Mother Bird. "Not because it is easy, but because you are braver than you were a moment ago."

One more time

So Pip climbed back up. This time, Pip flapped a little harder, a little steadier. The wind caught those small wings — and for three whole seconds, Pip was flying.

It was only three seconds. But three seconds became five, then ten, then a long, looping glide over the meadow. Pip laughed out loud with joy.

What Pip learned

That night, tucked back in the warm nest, Pip understood something important. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is trying one more time, even when the first time did not work.

And if you ever feel like Pip — afraid at the edge of something new — remember: every bird who flies today once fell yesterday.

The end.
